Chapter Eleven

England, AD 500

“I know Adelis’s story,” Uther said. “Or should I say, Kim’s.”

Seth swallowed hard. Adrenaline rushed in his veins. Kim. Uther knew! His heart beat fast. Where was his sword?

He and Pendragon were alone in the king’s quarters, where nobody could hear them. Nobody except all the mages in Kardoel with their enhanced senses.

And where was Kim? Right. She was with Vivienne and Bors, the only magical people he trusted around her.

“I want you to know that as long as you are under my roof, you are my guests and nobody would dare challenge you. Especially not with Merlin here.”

He was going to take their side? Why?

Uther opened a small box and took out two messages that had arrived with birds from the Order, dated a few weeks back. They described Kim and requested to be notified if people in his court met her.

“We will leave.”

“What? Not a word of it!” Uther pushed the messages aside. “I owe you my kingdom. Merlin told me that K…Adelis came here to protect the life of my…next of kin.”

So that was his motive. “Sir, these messages came from the Order.” Few kings would even think to stand against such an institute.

“All the more reason. She risked her life under their threat, just to come here to me.”

Not to him, to Merlin, but still for his benefit. “Yes. Did Merlin tell you anything else?” Did he know that they were not from his time? Did he know about Igraine?

“He said he’d reveal the name of a certain...important woman in due time.” Arthur’s mother.

“I am certain that Merlin is doing what he can to protect her.” There was no point getting into that topic.

Uther eyed him. “Did Adelis tell you who it is? Of course, she must have.” He thought for a moment. “Tell me.”

“Sire, are you sure you want to know if Merlin said you should wait?”

Miraculously, using Merlin’s statement as a reason worked.

“No.” Uther looked away sadly. “No, and I guess I have other reasons not to want to know.”

“Sire?”

“Hope. Sometimes even a false one. If it were only...her.”

Igraine.

Did he actually love her? You couldn’t ignore the change in the king since he met her and lost her. His new, unmistakable gloom that exposed his warmer side.

Seth smiled. “I know what that feels like. To want hope.” He couldn’t believe he was about to get into that with the king, but Uther seemed to want to talk.

“You do?”

“Adelis didn’t immediately tell me that I was her Charge. I wanted to be the one, so I chose to believe it, even though I knew I could be deluding myself, seeing what I wanted to see.”

“May my luck be as good as yours.”

It couldn’t. Not fully. Igraine would give him Arthur, but she was married to another man.

“Back to...Adelis.”

“Sire.” They had to be more cautious. For everyone’s sake. “They can hear us.” He pointed at the walls behind them, hinting at the mages around.

“But they can’t see.” Uther smiled and reached for paper and writing materials.
